Bison Host Mountaineers, Eagles in First Home Meet

WASHINGTON, DC --- In their final tune-up before their midseason championship-level competition, the Howard Bison opened their doors to welcome the Mount Saint Mary's Lady Mountaineers and the Mary Washington Eagles.  On the afternoon, the Bison were victorious in five races while posting 20 season-best races.
 
The Lady Bison fell to Mt. St. Mary's 189-51 and to Mary Washington's Lady Eagles, 199-40.  The men lost to Mary's Washington 171-84.
 
Freshman Jared Miller (Washington, DC) had a huge afternoon on the stat sheet for the Mighty Bison.  Miller was victorious in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 53.31.  That time places the rookie in a tie for third place all-time in Howard history.  Later in the afternoon, Miller pasted himself into seventh place all-time in the 100-yard butterfly with his comeback victory in a time of 53.90, his sixth first place finish in his young career.
 
After finishing in second place in the 200-yard backstroke against the Eagles, Miller finds himself again in seventh place all-time at HU with his time of 2:02.26.  Currently, Miller has his name in five events among the Bison Top Ten fastest swims of all-time.
 
The first individual event of the afternoon was won by junior Benjamin Skelding.  Swimming the 400-yard individual medley, Skelding (Palmdale, CA)tallied his fifth triumph of the year with a time of 4:31.74.  Fellow junior Dexter Brown (Pearland, TX) won for the second time this season, again in the 100-yard breaststroke.  His time of 1:02.38 was a season-best mark.
 
On the women's side, freshman Ayana Cox (Atlantic City, NJ) took care of the Lady Mountaineers in the 100-yard backstroke.  Her fourth victory of the season came at a time of 1:03.88.
 
The Bison will next travel this Thursday to Fairfax, Virginia for a three-day competition at the George Mason Invitational.  Along with the Bison and host Patriots, Howard will face American, George Washington, Richmond, Seton Hall, Shippensburg, UMBC and UNC-Wilmington.
