Boston, MA---The Howard University men's basketball continues its recent trek that includes four games in nine days when it travels to Boston to take on the Crimson of Harvard, Friday at 7 pm at the Lavietes Pavilion.
              Â
The Bison (2-1) are coming off their first loss of the season, a 77-57 setback at the hands of Old Dominion Wednesday in Norfolk, VA. In that game, Howard got a game-high 26 points in 27 minutes from freshman guard and 10 from
James Miller and
Prince Okoroh, but the rest of the team managed only 10 points on 2 of 22 shooting from the floor.
              Â
"When Daniel got into foul trouble, we had problems scoring the basketball," said Howard head coach
Kevin Nickelberry. "We were right there with them in the first half (Howard trailed 35-29 at the half) until he went out and we went into a scoring drought. We have to find a way to get other people to step up when that happens."
              Â
A 5-11 freshman from Phoebus High School in Hampton, VA, Daniel hit on 9 of 21 from the field, including 4 of 6 from three-point range. Miller, one of the top freshmen recruits, saw his first action of the season and finished with 10 points in 25 minutes. But Nickelberry adds that while he has the ability to be another legitimate scoring threat, not much can be expected so soon.
"He did a good job making shots early, but then as to be expected, he got a little tired," explained Nickelberry of his 6-4 freshman forward. "We need to work him back slowly. We have not had enough practice time with this schedule to get him fully acclimated."
              Â
The Monarchs were able to use their balanced scoring and experience to take advantage of the young Bison, who have 10 new players, nine of whom are freshmen. Nickelberry expects more of the same from Harvard, which is 2-0. ODU held a 44-28 bulge in points in the paint, scored 20 points off 10 Bison turnovers and scored 18 points off the fast break.
              Â
"Harvard is an experienced team that relies on balanced scoring," says Nickelberry. "We have to find a way to get more balance in our scoring. We can't depend solely on Daniel. Others have to step up."
              Â
Following this game, the Bison will travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Pitt Panthers in the first round of the Legends Progressive Classic at 5 pm in the Peterson Center. The game will be televised on ESPN3.
