James Daniel scored a game-high 26 and
James Miller made his season debut with 10 points it was not enough as Old Dominion University (1-1) used a balanced scoring attack to defeat Howard, 77-57 in a non-conference men's basketball game at the Ted Constant Convention Center.
Daniel, a 5-11 freshman guard from Hampton, VA, came into the game averaging 22 points. Â He and Miller, a freshman forward who missed the first two games with an injury, combined for 19 first half points to keep the Bison in range as they trailed 35-29 at the half. Â While the first year duo made 7 of 13 shots between them, the rest of the team missed 18 of 20.
The shooting woes continued in the second half for Howard (2-1) while the Monarchs shot 53 percent (15 of 28). Â Jordan Baker, Denzell Taylor and Richard Ross tallied 27 points among them to aid ODU in the second stanza.
The Bison won the second chance battle in offensive rebounding, but the Monarchs outscored Howard, 44-28 in the paint, maintained a 20-6 advantage in points off turnovers and won the fast break battle, 18-8.
Daniel added three steals to his stat line while Miller added 4 rebounds to his 10 points. Â Prince Junior forward
