ATLANTA (August 19, 2026) – The Black College Football Hall of Fame (BCFHOF) revealed its 2026 Watch List for the Deacon Jones Black College Football Player of the Year (POY) Award where Howard University graduates defensive back
Kedrick Green (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and running back
Eden James (Indianapolis) made the cut. The announcement came Tuesday (Aug. 18).
The Award is presented annually to the most outstanding football player from a Historically Black College & University (HBCU).
"The Black College Football Player of the Year Award represents the excellence, dedication and competitive spirit of HBCU football," said
Doug Williams, BCFHOF Co-Founder and 2011 Inductee. "These young men are building their own legacies, as they set the standard for themselves and others who will follow. In order to keep this tradition alive, we have to continue to exemplify the impact of HBCU football."
On July 29, both Bison were selected to the HBCU FCS National POY Award Watch List.
A year ago, Green had a breakout season with 60 total tackles (44 solos), including 3.5 tackles for loss, two INTs and a blocked kick.
Last season, James played in only two games due to injuries. In his collegiate career, the Indy native has almost 1,500 yards rushing for 5.0 yards per carry.
The Watch List candidates have been selected based on past performance and future potential. Additions to the list will be made as the 2026 season progresses. The finalists and the winner will be chosen by a Selection Committee.
Four finalists will be unveiled after the season with the winner of the Black College Football Player of the Year Award being announced during halftime of the 2027 Allstate HBCU Legacy Bowl. The Allstate HBCU Legacy Bowl will take place Saturday, Feb. 27, 2027, in Atlanta. The game will be broadcast live on NFL Network.
On Aug. 29, HU takes on Alabama A&M in the annual MEAC/SWAC Challenge in Atlanta, live on ABC.
