WASHINGTON, D.C. – Howard University lacrosse fell to Wagner, 13-5, Saturday afternoon at Greene Stadium.
Despite the final margin, the Bison (3-11 (2-5 NEC)) showed strong stretches through the first three quarters, with the battle remaining within reach before Wagner (5-8 (5-2 NEC)) used a decisive fourth-quarter run to pull away.
Senior attacker
Chase Coleman (Houston, TX) opened the scoring for Howard in the first quarter off a feed from Lima, tying the game at 1-1 shortly after Wagner struck first. The Bison continued to respond in the opening half, with Lima scoring twice in the second quarter to knot the game at 3-3.
Howard carried that momentum into the third quarter, as Lima completed her hat trick and junior attack
Chloe Ronsholdt (Stafford, VA) converted a free-position opportunity to cut the deficit to 7-5 late in the period.
Defensively, senior defender
Kendall Barker (Columbus, OH) led the way with a team-high three ground balls and caused turnovers, while freshman goalkeeper
London James-Golas (Annapolis, MD) recorded eight saves in the cage.
Freshman midfielder
Sophia Lima (Altadena, CA) led the offensive effort with a hat trick, marking her team-leading 21st goal of the season. Lima also added an assist, factoring into four of Howard's five goals.
The Bison were efficient on clears, going 18-for-21 (85.7%), and capitalized on two of three free-position opportunities.
However, Wagner controlled the final quarter, outscoring Howard 6-0 over the last 15 minutes to seal the victory.
Howard returns to action Saturday, April 25th at noon, when it hosts Stonehill College at Greene Stadium on Senior Day.
