COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Howard University softball (21-14) dropped a midweek matchup to Big Ten opponent Maryland Terrapins softball, 6-0, on Wednesday evening at College Park.
Maryland (15-26) struck quickly in the bottom of the first, utilizing three hits and a grand slam to build a 4-0 lead.
The Terrapins added single runs in the second and third innings, extending the lead to 6-0.
In the fourth inning, senior outfielder
Maryn Jordan (San Diego, CA) led off with a double to left field, putting Howard in a position to threaten the advantage. However, the Bison were unable to bring her home. Jordan, along with junior infielder
Wisdom Colbert (Jacksonville, FL), accounted for Howard's hits on the night.
In the fifth, Howard loaded the bases following a single by Colbert, a walk from freshman infielder
Janis Sutton (Marysville, CA), and a hit-by-pitch to freshman infielder
Aniyah Whipper (Elk Grove, CA), but could not capitalize.
Sophomore pitcher
Aiko Conaway (Haymarket, VA) took the loss, allowing six runs on six hits. Senior
Destiny Calloway (Evington, VA) and senior
Julia Holt (Tucson, AZ) combined for four scoreless innings in relief, limiting further damage and keeping the Bison within striking distance.
Howard returns to action this weekend with Saturday, April 18 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m for a doubleheader against Coppin State followed by the series finale on Sunday, April 19, at noon.
