WASHINGTON, D.C. – Howard softball delivered a commanding three-game sweep of Coppin State over the weekend at the Nationals Youth Academy, showcasing dominant pitching, timely hitting, and explosive innings in an 8-0 (5 innings), 10-0 (5 innings), and 7-3 series victory.
Game 1: Howard 8, Coppin State 0 (5 innings)
Howard set the tone early in the series opener, plating three runs in the first inning and cruising behind a dominant outing from
Aiko Conaway.
After a lead-off walk from
Maryn Jordan (San Diego, CA),
Wisdom Colbert (Jacksonville, FL) and
Taylor Ames-Alexander (Lancaster, SC) followed with consecutive hits to manufacture the game's first run.
Cheyenne Castille (Eastvale, CA) added a sacrifice fly that brought in two runs, and a double play ball later in the inning still allowed another run to score, giving Howard a quick 3-0 advantage.
The Bison continued to apply pressure offensively. In the second, Colbert delivered an RBI single to extend the lead, and Jordan added another RBI knock in the third to make it 5-0.
Howard broke things open further in the fourth inning when
Makyia Taylor lined a two-run single to left, scoring Colbert and Ames-Alexander. The Bison capped scoring in the fifth, as Jordan drove in
Tori Trotter (Lacey, WA) with a single to center to enforce the run rule.
Colbert led the offense with a perfect 3-for-3 performance, while Jordan and Taylor each recorded two hits and two RBIs.
In the circle, Conaway was flawless, tossing a complete-game no-hitter while allowing just one walk and striking out three.
Game 2: Howard 10, Coppin State 0 (5 innings)
Howard's offense stayed hot in game two, highlighted by a seven-run fourth inning for another run-rule victory.
Maryn Jordan jump started the scoring immediately, launching a solo home run in the first inning. Later in the frame, Castille doubled to left to bring in another run, giving the Bison an early 2-0 lead.
Howard added a run in the third when Ames-Alexander lifted a sacrifice fly to score Jordan, but the game broke open in the fourth.
The inning began with aggressive base running, as
Ariyah Allen (Converse, TX) stole second before scoring on
Tori Trotter's RBI double.
Merci Hart (Los Angeles, CA) followed with a sacrifice fly, and after two intentional walks, Colbert delivered a two-run single to center. Ames-Alexander and Taylor kept the line moving, with Taylor driving in another run on a double before
Zafirah Doss (Hayward, CA) capped the inning with a two-run single, extending the lead to 10-0.
Jordan finished 2-for-2 with three runs scored and the home run, while Colbert and Doss each drove in two.
In the circle,
Destiny Calloway earned the win with 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out two.
Julia Holt closed out the game with 1.2 innings of relief to complete the shutout.
The feat secured the series and the MEAC regular season title.
Game 3: Howard 7, Coppin State 3
Howard completed the sweep in the series finale, using another strong offensive start and steady pitching to secure a 7-3 win.
The Bison once again struck early, building a multi-run lead in the opening innings.
Unlike the doubleheader, Coppin State was able to respond offensively, pushing across three runs, but Howard's pitching staff limited further damage and held the Eagles in check down the stretch.
The Bison added insurance runs late to keep the game out of reach, sealing the sweep with a complete team effort.
Howard returns to action on Wednesday, April 22 at 5 PM, when they travel to Fairfax, VA to face George Mason.
