Men’s Tennis Comes Up Short in Season Finale

Morgan State edges out Bison in The District

WASHINGTON (April 13, 2026) – Howard University men's tennis squad wrapped up the regular season with a tough 4-3 loss to rival Morgan State (MSU) in D.C.

HU grabbed the upper hand early, taking two-out-of-three in doubles competition.

Junior Kendrick Lash (Winston, N.C.) and rookie Marcus Weekes (London, United Kingdom) served Bison Nation in the No. 2 doubles spot, topping MSU's Rhajzon Rankins and Yessine Kerouat, 6-3.

Third-year Bison Shawn Mitchell Yon (Queens, N.Y.) and newcomer Nathan Bermeo (Durham, N.C.) knocked off the Bears' Roman Filima and Antonio Santos, 6-2.

In singles play, Yon outlasted Filima in a three-set showdown (5-7, 7-5, 6-1) while Major defeated Rankins in straight sets (7-6, 6-2).

Weekes dropped a tough three-set bout to Morgan State's Maltsev Ilya (6-3, 2-6, 3-6).

MSU (7-11, 2-3 MEAC) won the other three singles contests in straight sets to take the match, 4-3.

Due to wet courts, the match was suspended and moved to the Southeast Tennis & Learning Center (STLC) midway through singles play. All doubles contests were played at the Banneker Recreation Center.

On April 23-25, HU (1-13, 1-4 MEAC) goes to Cary, N.C., for the MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) Championships.
