WASHINGTON (February 26, 2026) – Redshirt sophomore guard
April Edwards (Little Rock, Ark.) scored a career-high 22 points to lead the Howard University women's basketball team to 75-67 win over a determined Coppin State squad in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) at Burr Gymnasium.
The win extended the Bison's win streak to nine. But more important, the team went undefeated at home (11-0) for the first time in over two decades.
Edwards connected on 6-of-9 from the field, including 3-of-6 from the arc. Her previous high was 15 points versus Maryland Eastern Shore (Feb. 14). She is coming on strong at the right time for the Bison. In the past three games during the current streak, the Arkansas native has totaled 40 points and has converted on 17-of-21 free throws.
Edwards was not the only reserve who made an impact. Junior guard
Destiny Bynum-Johnson (Newark, N.J.) has played of late after missing some games with a knee injury. She has begun to find her stroke and contributed nine key points. Freshman guard
Dylan Watson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in with five points in 10 minutes of play.
For the game, Howard (21-7, 11-1 MEAC) had its most productive game of the season from its bench, which outscored the Eagles, 43-17, and accounted for 15 rebounds among them.
Coppin State (9-20, 6-6 MEAC), which came into the game winning five-of-its-last-six contests, flexed on the conference leader, outscoring them 16-9 as Khila Morris and Skylar Barnes combined to keep their team within striking distance.
With the Eagles paying attention to MEAC leading scorer and Player of the Year candidate senior forward
Zennia Thomas (Cleveland), Edwards, Watson and junior forward
Sa'lah Hemingway (San Bernardino, Calif.) combined for 16 of the team's 20 points. It allowed the Bison to take a 29-24 lead to the locker room.
The Bison shot 53-percent from the floor in the third quarter, but the pesky Eagles stayed close by hitting on 57-percent (8-of-14) of their shots, including 50-percent (4-of-8) from three-point land.
Howard led, 55-47, at the end of three quarters.
Then, the Bison turned up their vaunted defense and reeled off an 11-0 run over the last five minutes that all but put the game away. The defense stymied the Eagles and forced them into bad shots and turnovers.
Thomas finally found some to maneuver, scoring five points during the run. Thomas collected her ninth double-double (11 points & 10 rebounds) of the season. Hemingway had her best game of the season with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting and grabbing seven rebounds.
Senior forward
Nile Miller (Woodbury, N.J.) made her usual mark on the game, scoring only three points, but she grabbed five rebounds, recorded four steals and blocked two shots.
The Eagles were led by Morris with 17 points and Paris McBride with 13 points and six assists.
For the game, Howard got 17 points off Coppin State turnovers, won the battle in the paint, 30-22, and got 21 second chance points.
