WASHINGTON, DC — Howard University lacrosse (0-4) fell 16-5 in their home opener against crosstown rival American Sunday afternoon.
Howard struck first when
Gabrielle Nelson (Cincinnati, Ohio) found the back of the net at the 13:57 mark of the opening quarter. American responded with three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead going into the final period of the half.
The Eagles extended their advantage in the second quarter, building an 8-2 halftime cushion.
Sawyer Walker (Rehoboth Beach, Del.) scored late in the frame to keep the Bison within striking distance.
In the third,
Tea Vasquez (Oakland, Calif.) converted a man-up opportunity to make it 9-3, but the Eagles answered with three straight goals, extending their lead to 12-3 entering the final quarter.
Walker added two fourth-quarter goals — including a man-up score — to complete her first hat trick of the season and lead Howard offensively.
London James-Golas (Annapolis, Md.) made several key saves in goal to keep the Bison competitive during extended defensive stretches, as Howard successfully cleared multiple possessions despite consistent pressure.
Howard returns to action Tuesday, Feb. 24, with a 3 p.m. matchup at Columbia.
