WASHINGTON (October 4, 2026) — Howard University men's soccer (3-7-1, 1-1-1 NEC) battled Mercyhurst (3-3-4, 0-1-1) to a 1-1 draw Sunday at Greene Stadium, earning the first tie in the all-time series between the Bison and Lakers.
The Bison struck first in the 18
th minute when senior midfielder
Onarae Rice (Greenville, S.C.) scored his first collegiate goal. Rice finished a chance at the 17:13 mark, following assists from sophomore midfielders
Justin Mims (Norwalk, Conn.) and
Marshall Lloyd (Washington), giving Howard a 1-0 advantage.
Mercyhurst continued to pressure the Bison after falling behind, but Howard goalkeeper
Liam Keiller (Gaithersburg, Md.) made several key saves to keep the Lakers off the scoreboard.
Howard also created a chance late in the half when senior defender
Donovan Mose (Laurel, Md.) put a shot off the top woodwork in the 35
th minute.
Mercyhurst continued its offensive pressure after halftime, forcing Keiller into additional saves early in the second half.
Rice tested the Lakers' goalkeeper in the 48
th minute, but the attempt was saved.
The Lakers eventually found the equalizer in the 61
st minute, leveling the match, 1-1.
Howard looked to regain the lead later in the half with Mims and junior defender
Rayce Welborne (Lawrenceville, N.J.) registering shots, but neither attempt found the net.
Mercyhurst continued to generate opportunities down the stretch, but the Bison defense and goalkeeping unit held firm.
Keiller finished his outing with seven saves in 81:31 while fifth-year goalie
Joshua Snyder (Princeton, N.J.) entered for the final 8:29 and recorded four saves. Together, the Howard goalkeepers made 11 saves as Mercyhurst finished with a 26-5 advantage in shots and a 12-2 edge in shots on goal.
Rice led Howard with two shots, both on target, while Mims recorded an assist and one shot. Lloyd also added an assist while Mose and Welborne each recorded a shot.
Howard returns to action Thursday, Oct. 8, traveling to Williamsburg, Va., to face William & Mary at 6 p.m., in a midseason nonconference matchup.
