Travelle Bryson (Anderson, S.C.) scored a game-high 18 points and guards
Cedric Taylor III (Atlanta) and
Bryce Harris (Brentwood, N.Y.) added 14 points and 12 points, respectively, but contributions the bench and balanced scoring proved to be the difference as Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) defeated the Howard University men's basketball team, 69-57, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) showdown inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.
It was the third straight loss for the Bison (9-8, 0-2 MEAC) while the win snapped a six-game losing skid by the Hawks to Howard.
The Bison, who have been plagued with an assortment of injuries of late, battled the hosts and trailed, 34-30, at the half.
In the second half, the Hawks went to their bench and it proved to be the difference. UMES held a 17-5 advantage on production from its reserves.
Bryson and Taylor, who has missed several games due to injuries, kept their team within striking distance. The duo combined for 14-of-29 from the floor, but the rest of their teammates managed only 8-of-29 for the game.

Bryson added eight rebounds to his stat line and Taylor, who has played well since coming off injuries six games ago, added six rebounds, a team-leading four assists and two steals in defeat.
Another contributing factor was free throw shooting. Howard managed only 7-of-11 for the game. The Hawks, conversely, converted on 18-of-22 for 82-percent at the charity stripe.
UMES was led by Dorion Staples with 16 points, followed by Jaden Cooper (13 points). Michael Teal registered 11 points and a game-high six assists and reserve Zion Obanla netted 10 points off the bench.
