WASHINGTON (August 17, 2025) – Howard University women's soccer team secured its first win of the 2025 season, downing Hampton, 4-1, in the inaugural HBCU Invitational, held at Audi Field.
Reigning NEC (Northeast Conference) Rookie of the Year sophomore forward
Gabriella Garcia-Terrell (Centreville, Va.) was named the match MVP (Most Valuable Player) after registering a pair of goals in the second half.
Both squads were scoreless for majority of the first period until sophomore forward
Sinclaire Green (Ellicott City, Md.) recorded her first collegiate goal before intermission, 1-0.
After taking a 1-0 advantage into halftime, the Bison erupted for three scores to put the contest away.
Garcia-Terrell scored her first goal at the 48-minute mark, thanks to an assist from reigning NEC Midfielder of the Year
Samantha James (Herndon, Va.), 2-0.
Nearly six minutes later, reigning NEC Defensive Player of the Year graduate
Rachel Suttle (Smyrna, Ga.) earned her first goal of the season, 3-0.
Garcia-Terrell closed out the scoring with a penalty kick goal at the 65-minute mark, 4-0.
Hampton (0-1) avoided the shutout with a goal from Nylah Jennings (82').
Howard was the aggressor throughout, outshooting the Lady Pirates, 18-12.
Sophomore
Trinity Knox (Atlanta), the 2024 NEC Goalkeeper of the Year, recorded a shutout in 70 minutes of action.
For Hampton, Avery John posted eight saves in a losing effort.
Howard (1-1) returns to action Sunday, August 24, traveling to Huntsville, Ala., to take on Alabama A&M. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. CT.
