WASHINGTON (April 6, 2025) – Howard University softball (17-17, 11-1 MEAC) marked its third conference sweep Sunday afternoon, beating the rain and Delaware State (17-17, 5-7 MEAC), 2-1, at Nats Youth Academy in D.C.
The first inning saw all of the scoring action in the series finale.
With three walks and bases loaded, HU switched out the Bison on the mound. A wild pitch resulted in the first run of the game for the Hornets, 1-0.
With two outs on the board, Delaware State (DSU) could not utilize the loaded diamond as the Hornet at bat lined out to first.
The Bison made up for the disadvantage in the bottom half of the inning, capitalizing on confusion in the infield while crossing the plate on a throwing error, 1-1.
Howard gained the lead when the DSU catcher threw the ball to third, thinking the batter was out. A ready
Sidney Fletcher (Whittier, Calif.) made her way home from third base on the bad throw, 2-1. The California native led the Bison, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Julia Holt (Tucson, Ariz.) posted her seventh win of the season while allowing zero runs and striking out three Hornets.
Alyssa Vasquez (Eastvale, Calif.) led the field with 12 putouts while
Kenna Higa (Honolulu) added four assists to her stats.
On April 12-13, Howard faces Coppin State (CSU) in a MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) three-games series in Baltimore. Saturday (April 12), HU takes on CSU in a doubleheader at 1 p.m., followed by a seven-inning contest Sunday (April 13) at noon.
