BALTIMORE (April 13, 2025) – Howard University softball team extended its win streak to eight after Sunday's twinbill sweep at Coppin State (CSU). HU topped the Eagles in game one, 6-4, followed by a 6-3 victory in the nightcap.
GAME 1 – HOWARD 6, COPPIN STATE 4
HU mustered six runs on six hits in the series opener with six different Bison recording a hit.
Both squads were held scoreless in the first two innings until RBI singles from seniors
Kenna Higa (Honolulu) and
Alyssa Vasquez (Eastvale, Calif.) gave the Bison a 2-0 lead after three frames.
Next inning, graduate
Bri Martinez (Albuquerque, N.M.) drove in third-year Bison
Maryn Jordan (San Diego) on an RBI single to right center, 3-0.
Bottom five, sophomore
Merci Hart (Los Angeles) delivered a sac fly to center to bring home rookie
Lauryn Jones (Denton, Texas), 4-0.
CSU closed the gap with a three-run sixth inning, 4-3, but HU answered with a pair of runs to push the margin back to three, 6-3.
Coppin State scored another run in the seventh, but junior pitcher
Julia Holt (Tucson, Ariz.) ended any hope for a comeback with her eighth victory of the season. The Arizona native tossed a complete game while fanning five Eagles.
GAME 2 – HOWARD 6, COPPIN STATE 3
Howard racked up six runs on 11 hits, led by Jones going 3-of-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
HU got on the board first with a pair of scores in the third, 2-0.
Bottom three, CSU tied the contest with a two-run single up-the-middle, 2-2.
Next inning, Howard regained the upper hand with RBIs from Higa and Jones, 4-2.
After Higa's RBI single in the sixth extended HU's lead, 5-2, sophomore
Wisdom Colbert (Jacksonville, Fla.) scored on a passed ball to give the Bison a commanding 6-2 advantage in the final frame.
Coppin State scored a run in the seventh, but Holt kept the Eagles at bay.
Senior pitcher
Jordin King (Pomona, Calif.) secured her fourth win of the season, going 3.1 innings with two strikeouts in relief.
Fellow classmate
Mia Gonzales (Atwater, Calif.) got the starting nod, throwing 2.2 innings with five Ks in the no decision.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
Howard (19-17, 13-1 MEAC) wraps up season series with the Eagles Monday (April 14) in Baltimore. First-pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
