Men’s Tennis Closes Out Regular Season with Win over Coppin State

Bison secure first MEAC victory of the season on Senior Day

WASHINGTON (April 19, 2025) – Howard University men's tennis team closed out the regular season on a high note, earning its first MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) win of the season versus rival Coppin State (CSU) on Senior Day.

With the victory, HU snapped a two-match slide before the conference tournament.

Before the match, Howard Director of Tennis Nicholas Askew and Associate Head Coach Zach Tobias recognized two Bison for their hard work and dedication to the program: Marcel Dawson (Columbus, Ga.) and Daniel Dunac (Washington).

HU took the early 1-0 match lead into singles play, winning all three doubles contests.

Dawson and second-year Bison Michael Major Jr (Nassau, Bahamas) served as the squad's top doubles team, edging out CSU's Liam Murtaugh and Harsh Kheterpal, 7-6 [7-4].

Graduate Hassimiyou Dieng (Dakar, Senegal) and sophomore Kendrick Lash (Winston-Salem, N.C.) outlasted the Eagles' Dentry Mortimer and Tinashe Whata in the No. 3 slot, 7-5.

Dunac and newcomer Kaosie Nwokedi (Charlotte, N.C.) cruised past Coppin State's Aidan Thomas-Cogar and Rishi Jalota, 6-1.

In singles competition, the Bison won all six doubles matches in straight sets.

Howard (6-13, 2-4 MEAC) is set to compete in the 2025 MEAC Championships (April 24-26) in Cary, N.C.
