Bison’s title run ends versus rival Bears

CARY, N.C. (April 24, 2025) – Howard University men's tennis squad saw its title run end Thursday afternoon, dropping a 4-1 decision to rival Morgan State (MSU) in the MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) Quarterfinals in Cary, N.C.

Senior Marcel Dawson (Columbus, Ga.) and All-MEAC selection Michael Major Jr (Nassau, Bahamas) represented Bison Nation in the top doubles slot, taking down MSU's Makkijha Brown and MEAC Player of the Year Mikeal Carpenter, 6-3.

MSU took the early match lead into singles competition despite the setback, 1-0, winning the other doubles matches, 6-4.

In singles play, MEAC Rookie of the Year Kaosie Nwokedi (Charlotte, N.C.) defeated Brown in straight sets (6-3, 6-2).

Dawson and second-year Bison Mitchell Yon (Queens, N.Y.) saw their respective singles matches declared unfinished despite having a lead in the final frame.

Morgan State (8-15) won the other three singles contests in straight sets and moves on to Friday's (April 25) semifinal round versus top-seeded South Carolina State.

Dawson and fellow classmate Daniel Dunac (Washington) saw their respective collegiate careers come to halt.

Howard Director of Tennis Nicholas Askew and Associate Head Coach Zach Tobias look to reload for the upcoming 2026 campaign in the program's pursuit for another MEAC title.
