COLLEGE PARK, Md. (March 28, 2025) – Howard University men's tennis team suffered its first MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) loss of the season, falling to rival Norfolk State (NSU), 5-2, at the Juniors Tennis Championships Center in College Park, Md.
Sophomores
Michael Major, Jr. (Nassau, Bahamas) and
Mitchell Yon (Queens, N.Y.) scored the lone points for HU, winning their respective singles matches. Major defeated NSU's Jakub Solarski in three sets (6-2, 2-6, 7-6[7-5]) while the New York native topped Luka Cvjetkovic in straight sets (7-5, 6-4).
Fellow classmate
Kendrick Lash (Winston-Salem, N.C.) served in the No. 4 slot where he dropped a tough three-set contest to the Spartans' Frederick McRae (2-6, 7-5, 4-6).
Norfolk State won the other three singles matches in straight sets.
In doubles competition, Major and senior
Marcel Dawson (Columbus, Ga.) knocked off NSU's Boris Lunin and Vladisav Gorbatenko, 6-3.
Despite their efforts, Norfolk State went onto to win the other two doubles matches.
Saturday (March 29), HU (4-9, 0-1 MEAC) battles reigning MEAC Champion South Carolina State under the lights in College Park, Md. First-serve is slated for 6 p.m.
