Softball Falls, 9-3, to California

Four Bison post hits against Golden Bears

WASHINGTON (March 25, 2025) – In the first of two historic midweek matchups for the Bison, the Howard University softball team (11-16) fell, 9-3, to California (Cal) Tuesday afternoon.

Jordin King (Pomona, Calif.) opened the game with a strike straight down the middle. The Golden Bears' Elon Butler hit a shot, hugging the left line for a double before getting into scoring position when she stole third. With two strikes against them, the Bears opened the scoring when Butler stole home, 1-0.

Howard kept Cal at bay in the second. With eyes on their second run of the game, HU's Bri Martinez (Albuquerque, N.M.) caught Cal stealing third. Howard notched their first hit against the Bears in the bottom of the inning with a shot to right field from sophomore Maryn Jordan (San Diego).

The Bears made it a 3-0 lead in the third when a line drive brought Butler and Pons across the plate. Howard posted a second hit when standout freshman Lauryn Jones (Denton, Texas) singled in the bottom of the third.

In the top of the fourth, the Bears extended the lead, 6-0, with homers from sophomore duo Nailyn Marshall and Lagi Quiroga. Butler made it a three-homer inning when her shot to right field bounced off the top of the fence, 7-0. A fielding error inched the Bears away, 9-0, in the fourth. Sophomore Merci Hart (Los Angeles) notched her 15th hit of the season, resulting in a single to start the bottom of the fourth.

The Bison kept the Bears in their cage in the top of the fifth, allowing zero runs on their two hits. Howard joined the board in the bottom of the inning when senior Payton Quinonez (Tulare, Calif.) doubled to center field, allowing pinch runner Wisdom Colbert (Jacksonville, Fla.) to cross the plate, 9-1. Quinonez made it a 9-2 score when she took advantage of a throwing error to make it home. Hart posted another hit for the Bison in the fifth. With two outs against them, HU saw one of their best scoring opportunities when bases were loaded for the first time of the game for either team. The opportunity fell short as a pop fly to center field converted into the final out.

The Bison defense were locked in getting a double play to close the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the inning, Jordan notched her second hit of the day.

In the top of the seventh, Mia Gonzales (Atwater, Calif.) made her way to the mound, striking out the last batter with three straight Ks. Senior Sidney Fletcher made it to first base, notching a hit to center field. Alyssa Vasquez notched the eighth and final hit of the day for Howard, pushing Hart across the plate for the final 9-3 score.

Next up, the Bison host their second major softball program of the week, No. 6/5 UCLA, Wednesday (March 26) at 6:30 p.m., at the Nationals Youth Academy.
