100 Women for Howard: A Legacy in Motion

Groundbreaking initiative brings together 100 influential women in sports & business

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The room buzzed with excitement and anticipation as women from all walks of life gathered. Their conversations and laughter created a symphony of positive energy, filled with heartfelt stories of inspiration and resilience.

The atmosphere during the initial "100 Women for Howard: A Legacy in Motion" program on Thursday, March 6, inside of Burr Gymnasium, before the Howard University women's basketball game against Norfolk State, was impressive. The groundbreaking initiative brought together 100 influential women in sports and business to invest in the future of Howard women's basketball.

It was part of a Women's History Month celebration that provided an empowering space for women in sports, business, and media to exchange career insights and experiences. This impactful event brought to life the vision of Howard Director of Athletics Kery Davis, a steadfast advocate for uplifting and supporting women.

"The 100 Women for Howard: A Legacy in Motion event was a tremendous success, demonstrating the power of community and the unwavering support for our women's basketball program," Davis said. "This initiative helped continue our fundraising goals and provided our student-athletes with invaluable mentorship and career connections. Howard Athletics is committed to fostering opportunities that empower our athletes to succeed on and off the court. We are grateful to everyone who contributed to this movement and look forward to continuing to build a strong foundation for the future of Howard Women's Basketball."

April D. Taylor, CEO of The SVE Firm, made it a reality by creating a space where powerful and extraordinary women could unite and positively impact society. Behind the scenes, Taylor, along with many vendors, key influencers, and brand partners like Black Girl Vitamins and Jordan Brand, provided quality gifts and products. Connect some of the most significant women in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) region with Howard's student-athletes.

"Empowering women is important to me, in addition to sustaining economic support towards our NIL collective," Howard head women's basketball coach Ty Grace shared. "There were so many successful and powerful women at this event. The atmosphere was phenomenal. It truly embodied strength, brilliance, and excellence. This legacy in motion will continue to elevate our program, as well as the interests of other women in sports and beyond."

The décor, intentionally and strategically designed to curate a positive vibe, added to the ambiance, with motivational quotes and blue-and-white balloons in Howard's newly renovated lower gym creating a backdrop for these meaningful interactions. The program was more than just a gathering; it celebrated legacy in motion. Each conversation and each connection made was a step towards elevating the program and supporting Howard's Name, Image & Likeness (NIL) collective, the Mecca Society.

Even as Taylor hustled to ensure everything ran smoothly, she gracefully moved through the crowd, engaging with attendees, her eyes shining with pride and gratitude because Grace trusted Taylor to execute her vision. Taylor finds it meaningful to be part of a program that raises financial contributions for the Howard women's basketball program because she understands the power of investing in the future of young women.

"Watching (the student-athletes) talk to the panelists and see them have real connections made my heart happy," Taylor said. "This was a beautiful moment. It's challenging for student-athletes to have a strong professional development opportunity like this because of their schedules and time commitments, so it was great to provide this platform for them."

The impact of this program rippled far beyond the Howard campus, inspiring others to accomplish their goals, support one another, and create a vibrant tapestry of excellence that filled the room with a sense of purpose. Howard student-athletes, eyes wide with admiration, listened intently to the stories of those, including from Washington Spirit CEO Kim Stone and NBA head of programs and partnerships of the national basketball social justice coalition Mannone Butler, who had walked the path before them and led an intimate and inspiring fireside chat called "Making Boss Moves: Define the Leader in You."

Additional speakers included Erin Blaine, Fan Experience Manager of the Washington Mystics; Morgan Faulkner, Community Relations & Events Manager for the Washington Commanders; and Patty Medina, Associate AD of SA Development & Inclusive Excellence at American University in the "Let's Talk: Navigating Leadership and Career Growth" panel that was moderated Jaynel J., who works for DC Events.

The message resonated deeply: these student-athletes could soar to new heights with the proper support and investment. The financial contributions generated from the event will empower them to build their brands, achieve financial stability, and prepare for success beyond their collegiate careers.

After the segments concluded, the atmosphere whirred with excitement as student-athletes eagerly surrounded the speakers. Their eyes sparkled with admiration and curiosity, reflecting their eagerness to soak up every bit of wisdom and advice. They enthusiastically leaned in, hanging on to every word as the speakers shared personal anecdotes and professional insights. Some athletes took notes, while others snapped selfies with the speakers, capturing the memorable moments.

"It meant a lot to see so many powerful women come together," shared Howard freshman guard Saniyah King of the women's basketball team. "I'm very grateful for these ladies and their stories of resilience. They emphasized using life experiences as guidelines, the importance of reputation, and building meaningful connections. My main takeaway was to be a boss, carry myself with kindness and grace, have confidence and courage, and most importantly, bring others up with me."

It was clear that this event had not only educated but also deeply motivated the student-athletes, leaving them with a renewed sense of purpose and determination. This was more than just an event. It was a transformational experience, a legacy in motion, shaping the future for generations of women in sports and beyond.

The momentum doesn't stop here. To keep pushing Howard's women's basketball forward, we must continue investing in their future. By contributing to the Mecca Society today, you help fuel the dreams, ambitions, and success of the Bison—every donation, big or small, makes a lasting impact.
