BALTIMORE (February 15, 2025) – Howard University women's lacrosse team was unable to slow down UMBC Saturday afternoon, falling to the Retrievers, 24-4, in Baltimore.
Rookie
Kyla Newkirk (Durham, N.C.) led the way with a pair of scores in a losing cause.
UMBC (2-0) took control early, scoring the first seven goals until Newkirk ended HU's drought with the final goal of period one, 7-1.
Junior attacker
Chase Coleman (Houston) registered her first goal of the year before intermission, but the Retrievers held a double-digit advantage at the break, 13-2.
In the fourth quarter, back-to-back goals from Newkirk and grad transfer
Sawyer Walker (Magnolia, Del.) gave HU momentum going into the next match. The Delaware native added 10 draw controls, two ground balls and two caused turnovers in the loss.
Freshman goalie
Madeline Willocks (Freeport, N.Y.) recorded nine saves in her third career start.
For UMBC, Emily Knapp produced nine points (six goals & three assists), four ground balls and forced a pair of turnovers in the victory.
Howard (0-3) returns to action for a midweek matchup Wednesday (Feb. 26) at Radford. The game is set for 3 p.m., in Radford, Va.
