PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (February 10, 2025) – Graduate forward
Cameron Shockley-Okeke (Norwalk, Conn.) and senior guard
Marcus Dockery (Washington) each scored 18 points to help the Howard University men's basketball team pull away to a 77-57 win over Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) battle inside the Hytche Center.
The win upped the Bison's record to 10-14 on the season and 5-2 in the MEAC.
The Hawks bolted to an early 10-point lead before Howard settled in and put together a 16-8 run to trail, 34-32, at the half.
Then Shockley-Okeke and Dockery, two of the premier three-point shooters in the conference, began to find range and helped fuel a 9-0 run over a 1:56 period to take the lead and pull away. The duo combined for 7-of-15 from beyond the arc.
From there, D.C. natives
Anwar Gill and
Blake Harper began to get into the act. Utilizing their passing skills, the Bison had one of their better performances of late. In the second stanza, they shot 64-percent from the floor, including 50-percent (6-of-12) from the three-point line.
Gill proved effective, finishing with 12 points, six rebounds and six assists.
Harper, who was just named the MEAC Rookie of the Week for the 14
th time this season, came into the game as the conference-leading scorer at 19 points per game. Although he finished with 13 points, the 6-foot-8 freshman added 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season while also displaying his versatility with six assists and two steals.
Redshirt junior forward
Ayodele Taiwo (Lagos, Nigeria), who was named the MEAC Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career, was again a defensive force with six rebounds and a blocked shot while forcing several hurried shots at the basket by the Hawks.
Graduate guard
Jaren Johnson (eight points) and freshman forward
Calvin Robins Jr. (six points) were responsible for the Bison holding a 14-2 bench advantage.
Howard also held an advantage with a 30-24 edge in points in the paint, a 37-22 rebounding edge and 18 assists on 26 baskets.
The Hawks (4-19, 0-7 MEAC) were led Ketron "KC" Shaw, who led all scorers with 25 points, and Christopher Flippin and Evan Johnson with 12 points and 10 points, respectively, in a losing effort.
NEXT UP: Howard looks to extend its current win streak when it travels to Dover, Del., to take on the Hornets of Delaware State Saturday (Feb. 15) at 4 p.m.
