Men’s Basketball Falls to Delaware State on the Road

Hornets pull away late to down Bison

DOVER, Del. (February 15, 2025) – Freshman guard Blake Harper (Washington) scored a team-high 18 points and graduate forward Cameron Shockley-Okeke (Norwalk, Conn.) added 17 points but it was not enough as the Howard University men's basketball team fell to Delaware State (DSU), 90-69, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) showdown at Memorial Hall.

The Bison (10-15, 5-3 MEAC) had their two-game win streak snapped while the streaking Hornets (13-10, 5-3 MEAC) won their fifth-in-a-row.

Delaware State got out early and controlled the game, taking a 35-26 lead at the half. The Bison, one of the top three-point shooting teams in the country, never could get untracked with their specialty and the Hornets took advantage.

Howard's shooting woes continued after intermission, shooting a season-low 30 percent (8-of-27) from beyond the arc.

In addition to the cold shooting, the Bison were again victimized by their propensity to turn the ball over. The Hornets capitalized by converting Howard's 18 miscues into 27 points.

The injury-depleted Bison got little production from the remaining players.

Harper added four rebounds and three assists to his stat line.

Senior guard Marcus Dockery (Washington) finished with 12 points, almost five points below his season average, and for only the third time this season, he failed to connect on a three-pointer. The D.C. sharpshooter came into the game leading the conference in both three-point shooting percentage (43-percent) and three-pointers made per game (2.8). He did contribute four assists in a losing cause.

Graduate guard Joshua Strong (Minneapolis) tallied eight points off the bench.

A bright spot for the undermanned Bison was the 16 assists recorded on 22 made baskets. Howard ranks among the nation's leaders in assists per game (16.8).

Delaware State got a game-high 26 points and nine rebounds from Martez Robinson, 23 points from Robert Smith, Jr., and 15 points from Kaseem Watson.

NEXT UP: Delaware State travels to Norfolk, Va., in a big showdown with Norfolk State Monday (Feb. 17) at 7:30 p.m., while Howard looks to sweep Maryland Eastern Shore Monday (Feb. 17) at 3 p.m., inside Burr Gymnasium.
