Men’s Hoops Looks to Stay Hot at UMES

Bison travel across the bridge to face Maryland Eastern Shore

WASHINGTON (February 10, 2025) – Howard University men's basketball team looks to extend its win streak at Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m.

On Feb. 8, senior guard Marcus Dockery (Washington) scored a game-high 21 points and freshman standout Blake Harper (Washington) added 18 points but it was an outstanding effort from the reserves that helped the Bison hold off North Carolina Central (NCCU), 82-78, at Burr Gymnasium.
 
UMES
 
UMES (4-18, 0-6 MEAC) is coming off a 62-57 loss to Coppin State at home Monday (Feb. 3). The Hawks were led by Ketron "KC" Shaw (16 points & six assists), Christopher Flippin (14 points) and Kyrell Shaw (10 points & seven rebounds).
 
SERIES RECORD
 
Last meeting, Howard defeated UMES, 70-66 in Princess Anne, Md. (March 2, 2024). The Bison have won four straight against Maryland Eastern Shore. The Hawks last win was 82-73 in Princess Anne, Md. (Jan. 9, 2022). Howard leads the series, 24-15, dating back to 2004.

Kenneth Blakeney (Duke, '95), who is in his sixth season, and has led the Bison to two straight MEAC tournament titles and NCAA appearances. UMES is coached by Cleo Hill (NCCU), who is his first season.

Individually, Shaw leads the conference in minutes played (34.7 per game), third in scoring (18.2), fourth in rebounding (5.9), eighth in field goal percentage (44-percent) and free throw shooting (70-percent)…Christopher Flippin is seventh in rebounding (5.5)…Evan Johnson is fifth in three-pointers made per game (2.1) and 11th in assists…Kyrell Shaw is eighth in assists, ninth in assists/turnover and 10th in three-pointers made per game (1.6)…Jaden Ware is 10th in blocked shots.

Harper has established himself as one of the top freshmen in the country, being named MEAC Rookie of the Week 13 times this season and holding the honor of being named the MEAC Player of the Week twice....the talented freshman also holds the distinction of being rank  among all freshmen in scoring in the NCAA Division I behind Cooper Flagg of Duke…Harper is one of a handful of Division I players to have recorded a triple-double this season…Harper has recorded three double-doubles and has scored 30 or more points three times, including a career-high 35 points versus Hampton (Feb. 1)…Harper has reached double figures in all but two games...Dockery is quietly having his best all-around season in a Bison uniform, continuing to be the premier long ball shooter in the conference for the third straight season, having led the conference in three-point shooting percentage and in three pointers made per game…Dockery has flourished in other areas, including shooting a career-best 49-percent from the field overall; 42-percent from three-point land and 84-percent from the charity stripe…Dockery is scheduled to set a new career high in assists...Dockery ranks 31st in the country in three-point field shooting percentage...Dockery has also reached double figures in all but two games and the same for hitting at least on three pointer in all but two contests... Dockery currently ranks third on the school all-time list for three pointers made in a career behind Charles "CJ" Williams and Ron Williamson…Shockley-Okeke has reached double figures in scoring in eight of the last nine games…The Bison are averaging almost 18 assists per game and limiting opponents to 31-percent shooting from the three-point line…A nemesis for Howard has been the turnover where they are surrendering 18 points a contest off their miscues…Howard has now played with 12 different starting lineups, the most in the past 10 years…The 11 blocked shots by Taiwo versus NCCU (Feb. 8) was the second most in school history behind Grady Livingston, who set the school record with 12 blocks during the 1993-94 campaign.
 
HAWKS NOTES
 
UMES has lost seven-in-a-row and has failed to reach 70 points in those defeats…The Hawks have had problems scoring (averaging 67 points per game) and have had problems on defense (allowing 80 points per contest)…They are surrendering 17 points off turnovers this season.
 
NEXT UP
 
Howard continues its current road swing when it travels to Dover, Del. to take on the Hornets of Delaware State Saturday (Feb. 15) at 4 p.m.
