Men’s Basketball Defeats Hampton in Battle of the Real HU

Bison Defense Downs Pirates

WASHINGTON (December 13, 2025) – Graduate guard Bryce Harris (Brentwood, N.Y.) scored a team-high 16 points and recorded a double-double to lead the Howard University men's basketball team to a 61-57 win over Hampton in the Battle of the Real HU Classic at the Care First Arena in Southeast D.C.

The victory extended Howard's win streak to three, its longest of the season. It also snapped a three-game losing streak to the Pirates.

Harris, a 6-foot-4, proved to be too much for the Pirates to handle. For the game, the New York native efficiently connected 6-of-12 from the floor, grabbed 12 rebounds and added two blocks to his stat line.

Two rivals battled through eight ties and eight lead changes, but in the end, the Bison defense proved to be the difference.

All season, Howard (7-5) has relied on its defense. Against the Pirates, it was no different.

The Bison held Hampton to 26-percent shooting from the field (13-of-50), including a frigid 1-of-21 (5-percent) from beyond the arc.

Two other determining factors in the win was the distribution of the ball where Howard was credited with 11 assists on their 19 field goals. The Bison also got 19 points from its bench and turned Hampton miscues into 19 points in a low-scoring game.

Harris got help from junior guard Cam Gillus (Falls Church, Va.), who has had back-to-back big games. He finished 13 points on 3-of-5 from the floor and a season-high five steals.

The Bison welcomed Cedric Taylor III (Atlanta) back to the lineup after sitting out with a hand injury to start the season. Taylor, a junior transfer from Morehouse College and a prolific scorer, tallied 10 points in his debut off the bench.

Senior guard Ose Okojie (Brampton, Canada) just missed a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds in the win.

The Pirates, who converted on 23-of-31 from the free throw line, were led by Jalyke Gaines-Wright with 20 points to lead scorers. Christian Watson chipped in with 15 points off the bench.

NEXT UP: Howard looks to extend its current streak when it travels to the City of Brotherly Love (Philadelphia) to take on Drexel Tuesday (Dec. 16) at 11 a.m.
