CHICAGO, Ill. — Howard women's soccer (7–5–3, 5–1–2 NEC) suffered its first conference defeat of the year Sunday afternoon, falling 2–1 to Chicago State (3–7–5, 1–4–2 NEC) at Gwendolyn Brooks College Prep.
The Bison came out firing, striking first just five minutes into the contest.
Demi Owens (Teaneck, N.J.) netted her fourth goal of the season off a setup from
Bre'Elle Dean (Nassau, Bahamas), giving Howard an early edge. The Bison maintained control through much of the opening half, generating consistent pressure with eight shots — six on frame — and earning four corner kicks while limiting the Cougars to six attempts.
Trinity Knox (Atlanta) made three key saves to preserve the 1–0 advantage at the break.
Momentum swung in the second half after a penalty in the 58th minute allowed Chicago State to convert from the spot, leveling the match. The Cougars continued to push forward, breaking through in the 85th minute to take the lead for good. Despite a late push that included back-to-back corner kicks and shots from
Mia Young (Sunrise, Fla.), the Bison couldn't find the equalizer.
Howard finished with 12 shots (eight on goal) and eight corner kicks to Chicago State's 16 and three, respectively. Owens led the attack, tying a game-high four shots — all on target — while Knox tallied seven saves in goal.
The Bison return to action on Sunday, October 26th, at 1 PM as they continue NEC play with a home matchup against LIU.
