Mickens-Perez Lifts Howard Past LIU 1–0

Senior nets late winner as Bison earn sixth conference victory and third straight shutout

WASHINGTON — Howard women's soccer team continued its strong conference play Sunday morning, defeating Long Island University 1–0 at Greene Stadium. With the win, the Bison improve to 8–5–3 overall and 6–1–2 in NEC play, while the Sharks drop to 7–4–4 (5–2–2).

The opening half saw Howard control possession and create multiple chances early. Asia Mickens-Perez (Upper Marlboro, MD) forced the first save of the match in the ninth minute before Rachel Suttle (Smyrna, Ga.) struck the left post just two minutes later. Suttle followed with another attempt moments later that was turned away by LIU's keeper. Keeper Trinity Knox (Atlanta) anchored the Bison defense with four first-half saves, including key stops on efforts from LIU's Izzy Stein and Betty Hall to send the teams into halftime scoreless.

After a defensive battle through much of the second half, Howard finally broke through in the 87th minute. Mickens-Perez capitalized on a loose ball inside the box to deliver the game-winning goal, her third goal of the season, and ignite the Greene Stadium crowd. Knox and the Bison back line held firm over the final minutes to secure the shutout victory.
Mickens-Perez led all players with three shots on goal, while Gabriella Garcia-Terrell (Herndon, Va.) and Suttle each added two attempts. Knox recorded four saves en route to her fourth clean sheet of the year.

As a team, Howard outshot LIU 10–7, including a 6–4 edge in shots on goal. The Bison earned two corner kicks to LIU's three and held a slight 7–4 advantage in fouls.

The Bison are back in action on Thursday, October 30, when they host Saint Francis in their senior day game at 7 PM.
