WASHINGTON (January 31, 2025) – Howard University men's tennis team secured its first win of the season, taking down Loyola (Md.), 5-2, at the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation's East Capitol Campus in southeast D.C.
With the victory, HU (1-1) extended its win streak over the Greyhounds to four, dating back to the 2021 season.
Loyola (0-1) took the early match lead after winning a pair of contests in doubles play, but the Bison rebounded in singles competition with five victories.
Second-year Bison
Michael Major, Jr. (Nassau, Bahamas) served as the club's top singles play, defeating Loyola's Nick Lawliss in straight sets (6-3, 6-4).
Senior
Marcel Dawson (Columbus, Ga.), sophomore
Kendrick Lash (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and rookie
Kaosie Nwokedi also won in straight sets.
After dropping game one, sophomore
Mitchell Yon (Queens, N.Y.) rallied to knock off the Greyhounds' Blake Edwards in three sets (4-6, 6-4, 10-6).
Saturday (Feb. 1), the team travels to Newark, Del., to face off against the Delaware Blue Hens. First-serve at 4:30 p.m.
