WASHINGTON (January 11, 2025) — Freshman guard
Saniyah King (Washington) scored a game-high 23 points to lead four Bison in double figures as the Howard University women's basketball team won, 75-58, versus Morgan State (MSU) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) clash at Burr Gymnasium.
It was the second straight win for the Bison while Morgan State (9-9, 2-1 MEAC) had a three-game win streak snapped.
King, the odds-on-favorite for MEAC Rookie of the Year, put her signature on the game, hitting on 8-of-14 from the field, dealing out four assists and getting four steals in a night's work.
The Bison (9-8, 2-0 MEAC) jumped to the early 19-11 first quarter lead and never looked back. It was King who set the tone, scoring eight of her team's points.
From there, graduate guard
Destiny Howell (Queens, N.Y.), senior reserve forward
Vanessa Blake (Summerville, S.C.) and junior forward
Zennia Thomas (Cleveland) got into the act as Howard shot a sizzling 70-percent (14-of-20) in the first 20 minutes.
Meanwhile, the Bears had problems against the Howard matchup zone, which forced them into 8-of-29 from the field, including 0-of-9 from three-point range.
Junior forward
Nile Miller (Haddonfield, N.J.) and redshirt sophomore guard
Tyana Walker (Leawood, Kan.) each had one of their better all-around games of the season. Miller impacted the game by scoring five points, grabbing eight rebounds, recording four assists (career-best) and blocking two shots in 29 minutes of play.
Walker has had problems finding rhythm this season after being named last year's MEAC Rookie of the Year; however, may have found something. She came off the bench to connect on 3-of-5 shots from the field, including a perfect 3-of-3 from three-point land for nine points.
Howell chipped in with 12 points and Thomas and Blake each with 10 points in the victory.
For the night, the Bison defense forced 18 Morgan State turnovers and got 22 points off them.
Howard limited Morgan State to 33-percent (20-of-60) and 2-of-21 from beyond the arc.
HU shot 7-of-13 from downtown where they have struggled (28-percent) this season.
Morgan State was led by redshirt sophomore Naya Ojukwu, who tallied 16 points and six rebounds, and Laila Fair, who finished with 11 points and eight rebounds in the loss.
NEXT UP: Howard closes out its current three-game home stand when it takes on much-improved Coppin State Monday (Jan. 13) at 5:30 p.m., inside The Burr.
