WASHINGTON (January 13, 2025) – Freshman guard
Saniyah King (Washington) scored 15 of her team-high 17 points in the second half and junior forward
Nile Miller (Haddonfield, N.J.) added 15 of her career-high 16 points after intermission to lead the Howard University women's basketball team to a 76-71 come-from-behind win over Coppin State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) clash at Burr Gymnasium.
As important as the contributions of King and Miller were during the turnaround, it probably could not have happened had it not been for the contribution of sophomore guard
Janyah Bohanon (Cleveland), who came off the bench to score a career-high 13 points in 15 minutes of play.
With the Bison trailing double digits and unable to get anything going, it was the 6-foot-2 Bohannon who came to the rescue. She connected on all four of her shots from the floor while converting on 5-of-6 from the free throw line to keep the game from getting away.
Coppin State held a seemingly comfortable 37-25 lead at the half and kept Howard at bay, courtesy of the scoring of Angel Jones, Tiffany Hammond and Tyler Gray. Each time, Howard would seem to get the score under double digits, but the trio came with timely baskets.
Howard was able to pull even, 21-21, in the third period, but still trail, 58-46.
That is when King, Miller, graduate guard
Destiny Howell (Queens, N.Y.) and junior forward
Zennia Thomas (Cleveland) went to work.
The Bison turned up the heat on the visitors with their full-court pressure and went on a 16-0 run to tie the game, 60-60, with 5:26 in the fourth quarter on a King three-point play. The MEAC Rookie of the Week scored on a pull up jumper, followed by Howell's drive to the basket and Thomas' put back that gave the Bison a 66-60 lead.
The Eagles seemingly wore down and began to miss some of the shots that they had hit earlier.
Down the stretch, Howell and King combined to convert eight free throws to earn the hard-fought victory.
King added six assists and three steals and redshirt sophomore
Tyana Walker (Leawood, Kan.) came off the bench to contribute eight points in 13 productive minutes of play.
The Eagles were led by Jones, who led all scorers with 22 points. Tiffany Hammond and Cire Worley with 12 points each and Gray added 10 points in the loss.
Coppin State, which shot 50-percent in the first half, was held to 25-percent (3-of-12) in the final quarter.
The Eagles turned the ball over 15 times in the second half.
NEXT UP: Howard gets some days off before resuming action Saturday (Jan. 25) at Norfolk State. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
