Women’s Soccer Begins Road Swing at No. 4 Virginia

Bison face biggest test of the season in Charlottesville

WASHINGTON (September 8, 2024) – Howard University women's soccer team heads to Charlottesville, Va., to meet the No. 4 Virginia (UVA) Cavaliers. Match will kick off at 2 p.m. in Klockner Stadium.

MATCHUP PREVIEW
 
Sunday's showdown will be the second meeting between both programs. In the last meeting, Virginia and Howard met in the 2015 NCAA Tournament where UVA defeated HU, 7-1.
 
HOWARD
 
Howard (1-2-3) previous game ended in a tie against crosstown rival George Washington, 2-2. They will be coming into this match looking for a big upset while giving give the Cavaliers (6-0) their first loss of the season.
 
Redshirt Junior Rachel Suttle (Smyrna, Ga.) scored her fifth-career goal and first for the 2024 season. As a defensive enforcer, the Bison are proud to have assigned her the center back position.
 
The rookie forward Gabrielle Garcia-Terrell (Centreville, Va.) racked up five shot attempts in the previous match, making it her second highest of the season.
 
The Bison have been picked to finish third in the preseason, led by longtime head coach Brent Leiba, who is entering his 15th year.
 
VIRGINIA
 
The Cavaliers are looking to close out its nonconference slate unblemished.
 
The Cavaliers moved up into the top five of the national rankings, taking over the fourth spot in the United Soccer Coaches rankings to give the ACC the top four spots in the polls for week four.
 
LAST TIMEOUT
 
Thursday (Sept. 5), Howard tied with George Washington, 2-2, at Greene Stadium.
 
After trailing 1-0, in the 54-minute, Howard responded off a corner kick where Mimi Richards (Silver Spring, Md.) crossed for a header to Suttle.
 
In the waning moments, senior midfielder Kyra Bolden (McLean, Va.) scored the tying goal, thanks to an assist from sophomore Samantha James (Herndon, Va.).
 
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
 
On Sept. 12, Howard continues its road trip where they face off against Longwood in Farmville, Va. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m., at Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field.
