Men's Soccer Opens Conference Slate with a Win

Four Bison scored in the conference opener

WASHINGTON (September 29, 2024) – Howard University men's soccer team opened the conference slate with its first win of the season after Sunday afternoon's 4-1 victory over Central Connecticut (CCSU) at Greene Stadium.

The victory marked the first program win since October 2023, moving the Bison to 1-4-2 (1-0 NEC) on the season while the Blue Devils drop 0-8-1 (0-1 NEC).

Jackson Lewis (Alexandria, Va.) started the crusade in the 21st minute with a low shot in the center of the goal for a 1-0 lead. The grad marked his first goal of the season with help from Troy Matingou (Round Rock, Texas) and Roman Stallings (Tyrone, Ga.).

The Blue Devils balanced the score nine minutes later with a high shot left of the keep, 1-1.

Working to break the stalemate out of the half, HU got off two quick shots saved by CCSU's Mick Sipples before skirting a low ball by the keep for a 2-1 advantage.

The Bison kept the momentum going in the 67th minute when Mason Christian (Fulton, Md.) netted his fourth goal of the season, 3-1.

Freshman midfielder Zach Simmons (Rockwall, Texas) sealed the deal with 4:24 left in the game, 4-1.

HU outshot CCSU, 23-11, while capitalizing on six corners to the Blue Devils' seven.

Liam Keiller (Gaithersburg, Md.) notched two saves to add to this season's stats.

Next up, the Bison face No. 1 Pitt in Pittsburgh Wednesday (Oct. 2) at 7 p.m., before continuing their four-game road slate.
