WASHINGTON (September 21, 2024) – Howard University men's soccer team held the upper hand late in Saturday's home opener until UC San Diego's (UCSD) Max Carvalho scored his second goal of the season to force a draw, 2-2, at Greene Stadium.
Both squads went scoreless in the first 45 minutes of action but picked up the pace after intermission.
At the 65-minute mark, DMV native graduate midfielder
Peter Gansallo (Bowie, Md.) scored his second goal of the year, thanks to an assist from fellow classmate and native
Jackson Lewis (Alexandria, Va.), and put HU on the board first, 1-0.
Nearly five minutes later, UCSD's Evan Wellerstein knotted the match at one apiece, 1-1.
In his third collegiate start, newcomer
Angi Bacic (Lustenau, Austria) gave Howard a 2-1 edge until Carvalho's goal tied the contest before end of regulation.
HU outshot the Tritons, 15-13, led by senior
Bryson Baker (Ellicott City, Md.) with four attempts.
UCSD's Nolan Premack tallied six saves in the tie.
On Sept. 24, Howard (0-4-1) hosts crosstown rival George Washington inside Greene Stadium. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
