WASHINGTON (September 1, 2024) – Howard University women's soccer team dropped its first home contest of the season, falling to UMBC, 2-0, at Greene Stadium.
Despite the setback, HU (1-2-2) outshot the Retrievers, 15-13, led by All-NEC selection
Melea Earley (La Mirada, Calif.) with four shot attempts.
Meghan McKye put UMBC on the board within five minutes of play, 1-0, thanks to assists from Payton Schenning and Natsha Munro.
Moments before intermission, the Retrievers extended their lead with a goal by Aby Joseph, 2-0.
HU came out aggressive after halftime, outshooting the Retrievers, 10-2, in the final 45 minutes, but unable to breakthrough.
Rookie
Gabrielle Garcia-Terrell (Centreville, Va.) took three shots while the reigning two-time Northeast Conference (NEC) Player of the Week
Mimi Richards (Silver Spring, Md.) had two shots on goals in a losing effort.
Sophomore goalie
Trinity Knox (Atlanta), the 2023 NEC Goalkeeper of the Year, made her season debut, finishing with four saves.
For UMBC, Abbey Cowles and Sare Gavagan split time at goalie, combining for eight saves in the victory.
On Sept. 5, Howard finishes off its brief two-match home stand versus George Washington on National Cheese Pizza Day and Bison's Canned Food Drive. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., at Greene Stadium.
