Athletics named Program of the Year

CROSS ROADS, Texas (July 29, 2024) – Saturday (July 27), HBCU Sports celebrated and honored the achievements and people in Black College with its inaugural Sports Awards show where Howard University won five accolades. The program streamed live on YouTube through the HBCU Sports Channel, hosted by its well-rounded crew of Kenn Rashad, Kendrick Marshall, Chris Stevens and Jarrett Hoffman.

Howard Department of Athletics highlighted the afternoon, taking home Athletic Program of the Year. In May, HU won the 2023-24 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Mary McLeod Bethune Women's All-Sports Award for the third consecutive year (seventh overall), tying the longest streak in school history set back in the late 1980s (1988, '89 & '90). On the men's side, HU placed second in the league's All-Sports Award by winning a MEAC title in football and runner-up finishes in indoor and outdoor track & field and men's basketball.

Individually, Howard Director of Athletics Kery Davis was named Athletic Director of the Year after earning the prestigious National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) AD of the Year Award.

Rya McKinnon (Hoover, Ala.) claimed Volleyball Player of the Year after being picked MEAC Player of the Year for the second consecutive year.

On the green, golfers Gregory Odom Jr. (Memphis, Tenn.) and Morgan Horrell (Dallas) swept the competition, winning Men's & Women's Golfers of the Year, respectively. Both Bison were named to the All-NEC First Team.

Entering Saturday's historic event, the Bison led all schools with 20 nominations.

Overall, HBCU Sports recognized student-athletes, coaches and administrators in 45 categories across the entire HBCU athletics landscape.

On Aug. 14, Howard Athletics kicks off the 2024-25 campaign with women's soccer hosting Saint Peter's at Greene Stadium.
