NORFOLK, Va. (May 6, 2024) – Howard University women's track & field team sits in fourth place after Day One of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Championships, held on the campus of Norfolk State University (NSU) in Norfolk, Va.
Collectively, the Bison scored 14 points on Day One.
In the field, graduate
Zaria Opara (Carnation, Wash.) and
Temi Banwo (Allen, Texas) represented Bison Nation in the discus where they placed sixth (37.12 meters) and eighth (35.38 meters), respectively. Both Bison combined for four points in the event.
On the track, junior
Joslyn Crosby (Bossier City, La.) and fifth-year runner
Breanna McDonald (Bethesda, Md.) competed in the 10K race, earning second (39:32.62) and seventh (42:29.06), respectively, while tallying 10 points for the Bison.
Throughout the afternoon, several Bison qualified for Championship Wednesday.
Five Bison reached the 200-meter dash final: graduate
Kailei Collins (Houston); junior
Tiffani-Rae Pittman (Bowie, Md.); sophomore
Zoe Turner (Mableton, Ga.) and rookies
Aiyana Gray-Williams (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and
Mackenzie Robinson (Ypsilanti, Mich.).
In the 400-meter hurdles prelims, graduate
Simone Watkins (Frisco, Texas) and sophomore
Aniya Woodruff (Harrisburn, N.C.) won their respective heats with AQ times of 59.50 and 59.55, respectively. Graduate
Cathrina Morris (Auburndale, Fla.) and newcomer
Leyanis Castillo (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) joined their fellow teammates in the final round with non-automatic qualifying marks of 59.71 and 1:03.59, respectively.
NSU leads after Day One with 32 points, followed by Delaware State (23 points).
HU looks to move up the standings Tuesday (May 7) for Day Two of the MEAC Championships. The action starts 9 a.m., on the campus of NSU.
