CARY, N.C. (April 25, 2024) – No. 4 Howard University men's tennis team moved on to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Semifinal Round, eliminating rival No. 5 Morgan State (MSU) with a 4-2 victory at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
With the win, HU improved to 6-10 overall while extending its win streak to a season-high three.
Howard dominated doubles competition, winning a pair of matchups.
Third-year Bison
Marcel Dawson (Columbus, Ga.) and rookie
Kendrick Lash (Winston-Salem, N.C.) served as the club's No. 2 doubles squad, knocking off MSU's Rachal Niles and Rhajzon Rankins, 6-3.
Seniors
Hassimiyou Dieng (Dakar, Senegal) and
Gabe Knowles (Allentown, Pa.) cruised to victory, topping the Bears' Karenzi Bertin and Kondwani Patterson, 6-1.
All-MEAC selection newcomer
Michael Major, Jr. (Nassau, Bahamas) and senior
Justin Cadeau (West Orange, N.J.) led their doubles match, 5-3, before being announced as unfinished.
In singles play, Cadeau and Lash held on to win pivotal three-set contests while Dieng secured a victory in straight sets over Makkiha Brown (6-3, 7-5).
MSU finished its 2024 season with a 7-13 overall record.
Friday (April 26), HU battles top-seeded and defending MEAC Champion South Carolina State in the MEAC Semifinal Round. First-serve is slated for noon, live on ESPN+.
