EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 8, 2024) – Howard softball starts a new win streak, marking its third-in-a-row with Friday afternoon's 6-3 victory over Mount St. Mary's in extras.
Amelia Weber (Montclair, Calif.) registered her seventh win of the season, striking out six Mountaineers across 7.2 innings.
The Mountaineers opened the scoring in the first when a hit to third base resulted in run across the plate. After going scoreless in the second and third innings, Mount St. Mary's tacked on another run in the fourth for a 2-0 lead.
The Bison got on the board in the fifth frame when
Alyssa Vasquez's (Downey, Calif.) shot up the middle gave
Bianca Worthy (Goodyear, Ariz.) time to run home, 2-1.
After holding The Mount at bay through the sixth, HU took the lead in the third when the Bison took advantage of a fielding error, seeing Worthy cross the plate for the second time of the day, along with newcomer
Bria Finley (Buford, Ga.), 3-2.
A fielding error in the seventh resulted in a play that tied the board, 3-3, forcing an extra inning.
The Bison took off in the eighth, recording three hits and three runs – enough to seal the deal at Meadows Field. First-year
Cheyenne Castille (Eastvale, Calif.) was the last Bison to cross the plate when she capitalized on a throwing error for a 6-3 finish.
The Bison are back in action Sunday (March 10) at 11 a.m., when they face the Purple Eagles of Niagara University, followed by a 1 p.m., rematch with the Mountaineers.
