Bison Fall Short Against No. 8/9 Tennessee

Softball drops final nonconference matchup against SEC perennial

WASHINGTON (March 11, 2024) – Howard softball fell, 11-4, to the University of Tennessee (UT) Monday evening in their final nonconference matchup of the season.

The matchup served as another program milestone for the Bison, having hosted their first nationally ranked team. The Vols are ranked in ninth in USA Softball standings.

The Volunteers opened the scoring in the top of the first when McKenna Gibson hit to the left side, bringing teammate Kiki Milloy across the plate, 1-0.

The second frame saw the most action with Tennessee posting nine runs, forcing a change on the mound.

The Bison kicked it into high gear in the second as well, cutting the board nearly half. Junior shortstop Sidney Fletcher (Whittier, Calif.) highlighted the bottom of the second, kicking off a four-run inning with her third homer of the season. The play brought Kenna Higa (Honolulu) in along the way for a 10-2 score.

A big hit from rookie standout Merci Hart (Los Angeles) to the left side resulted in a 10-3 score. The next at bat Hart advanced to second on an error. The play gave fellow freshman Angel Riggins (San Diego) a chance to run home on the throw to continue to close the gap, 10-4.

After four scoreless innings for both teams, the Vols saw their next scoring opportunity in the top of the seventh. With one out on the board and bases loaded a fielder's choice gave Tennessee time to reach home, 11-4.

The Bison battled it out in the bottom of the frame. Bianca Worthy (Goodyear, Ariz.) sent a promising hit out to center field, but the shot dropped before making it out of the park for the first out on the board. Maryn Jordan (San Diego) followed up with a strong hit that went back to the pitcher before Amelia Weber (Montclair, Calif.) connected with the ball that lined out to third.

The Bison posted seven hits in the matchup with freshman trio Hart, Riggins and Cheyenne Castille (Eastvale, Calif.) notching two apiece.

Next up, the Bison kick off conference play in Durham, N.C., when they face North Carolina Central Saturday, March 16 at 1 p.m.
