WASHINGTON (March 4, 2024) – Graduate guard
Jordan Hairston (Fairfax, Va.) scored a season-high 24 points and junior guard
Bryce Harris (Brentwood, N.Y.) added 23 points to help the Howard University men's basketball team run away to an 85-66 win over Delaware State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game at Burr Gymnasium.
It was the fourth straight for the streaking Bison, who have won eight of their last 10.
The first half was nip and tuck as the teams took turns either tying the game or exchanging the lead five times.
Howard (13-14, 10-3 MEAC) stretched out on the Hornets (8-18, 4-9 MEAC) with Harris doing the damage with his physical presence, scoring 10 of his team's 16 points.
The Bison led 43-32 at the half.
Harris, a strong candidate for both MEAC Defensive and Offensive Player of the Year, continued his dominance until Hairston, sophomore forward
Shy Odom (Roxbury, Mass.) and graduate forward
Seth Towns (Columbus, Ohio) got into the act.
Howard had one of its most efficient games of the season, shooting 53-percent (29-of-55) from the floor, 45-percent from three (9-of-20) while recording a season-best 25 assists on 29 made baskets.
It was one of the most physical games of the season for the Bison, who muscled their way to a 40-20 advantage in points in the paint.
Harris added to his stat totals, grabbing eight rebounds, dealing out four assists and blocking a shot.
Hairston hit on 9-of-14 from the field, including 6-of-9 from downtown. It marked the fifth straight game that Hairston has reached double figures.
Odom, who has battled injuries most of the season (played in only 18 games), is finally healthy and he showed it with 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting and dropping four dimes for good measure.
Towns, the team's second leading scorer, had 10 points and six rebounds.
Sophomore forward
Dom Campbell (Scarborough, Maine) had six points and seven rebounds off the bench.
Delaware State was led by Martaz Robinson with 20 points and 10 rebounds for a double double while Jevin Muniz contributed 14 points. The Hornets' outstanding freshman point guard Deywilk Tavarez was injured and played only 17 minutes and finished with nine points.
NEXT UP: Howard closes out the regular season Thursday (March 7) at first place Norfolk State. Game time is 9 p.m., live on ESPNU.
