NORFOLK, Va. (March 7, 2024) – Howard University men's basketball team dropped its season finale, 77-58, at Norfolk State (NSU).
With the loss, HU dropped to 15-16 (9-5 MEAC) on the season while the Spartans locked up the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Regular Season Outright title.
Junior guard
Marcus Dockery (Washington) led all scorers with 17 points on 4-of-7 shooting from long range.
Howard opened the contest with a 14-4 spurt, but NSU (21-10, 11-3 MEAC) answered and tied the game with 5:37 left in the half, 24-24.
Jamarii Thomas scored on a layup and give the Spartans their first lead since the opening moments, which NSU never looked back.
Norfolk State took a three-point advantage at the break, 29-26.
After intermission, the Bison pulled within one on multiple occasions, but unable to get over the hump.
With more than nine minutes remaining, NSU held a slim one-point lead, 46-45, until the Spartans went on a 15-6 run to extend their advantage to double digits, 61-51.
Norfolk State closed the contest from that point, ending the game with a 16-7 spurt while clinching the regular season outright championship.
Graduate forward
Seth Towns (Columbus, Ohio) finished the night with 10 points, eight rebounds and a pair of assists.
For NSU, they tallied 40 points off the bench, compared to the Bison's 18 points. Thomas led the Spartans with 16 points, six boards and four assists in the victory.
Howard, the defending tournament champion, awaits the seedings (TBA) for next week's MEAC Tournament, which gets underway Wednesday (March 13) in Norfolk, Va.
