WASHINGTON (March 30, 2024) – The Howard University softball team (24-7, 8-1 MEAC) is not letting up, marking its second straight series sweep with Saturday afternoon's 10-2 win over Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES).
The Bison led off strong with their first three batters connecting with the pitch. Transfer
Kenna Higa (Honolulu) posted the first run of the day when she booked it home on the throw from centerfield to home. After stealing second,
Bianca Worthy (Goodyear, Ariz.) slid across home plate when
Maryn Jordan's (San Diego) line drive to right center stayed low and out of reach from the Hawks in the outfield for a 2-0 lead.
Junior
Lealani Ricks (Madera, Calif.) kicked off the Bison's scoring in the second frame with a bunt toward the left line. First-year
Justine Lambert (Camarillo, Calif.) got underneath the ball to follow up with a line drive to center field. The hit gave Ricks time to travel around the diamond back to the dugout for a 3-0 board. The Bison continued to pull away in the second when Worthy posted another hit, allowing Lambert to steal home on the throw to first. Standout freshman
Angel Riggins (San Diego) put another hit on the board when she sent one out to right field, just above the outfielder's glove. The final hit of the frame resulted in two more runs for HU to lead 6-0 going into the third inning.
Quick-handed defense kept both teams scoreless in the third, but the Hawks would change the narrative in the top of the fourth.
With no outs on the board and bases loaded, HU went to the bullpen in hopes of thwarting a UMES charge. A sac fly to deep center field from the next batter up resulted in the Hawks' first run of the day. UMES (6-24, 1-8 MEAC) notched one more run off a sac fly to close the gap 6-2 before ending the frame.
Sophomore
Kelyse Stewart (Lee's Summit, Mo.) highlighted the bottom of the fifth with a 2-RBI base hit to right field, pulling the Bison away, 8-2.
After keeping the Hawks in place in the top of the sixth, Howard found themselves in scoring position once again when sophomore
Iyanna Fortenberry (Richmond, Va.) stole her way around the diamond. A base hit from
Alyssa Vasquez (Eastvale, Calif.) to follow brought Fortenberry home, 9-2. Riggins closed it out with her last hit of the day to bring in the Bison's 10
th run for a 10-2 victory.
On April 6-7, Howard goes to Dover, Del., to face Delaware State. The series starts with a Saturday (April 6) doubleheader at 1 p.m., followed by a seven-inning contest Sunday (April 7) at noon.
