Nadia Pegram (Naples, Fla.) and rookie
Imani Jean (Brooklyn, N.Y.) extended their respective singles win streaks, but the Howard University women's tennis team dropped its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opener against South Carolina State (SCSU), 5-2, at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
With the setback, HU (5-8, 0-1 MEAC) saw its win streak come to a halt at three.
Pegram and Jean highlighted the morning, earning victories in singles play.
Pegram extended her win streak to nine after defeating SCSU's Vujicic Teodora in three sets (6-1, 5-7, 6-3).
Jean improved to 6-3 in singles competition, including her second consecutive win, knocking off South Carolina State's Mahbouli Feriel in straight sets (6-0, 6-3).
Third-year Bison
Jordan Grayson (Gaithersburg, Md.) served as the club's No. 2 singles player where she dropped a hard-fought three set match to SCSU's Semlali Hind (6-4, 4-6, 3-6).
SCSU won the other three singles contests in straight sets.
In the doubles play, Grayson and sophomore
Selah Stibbins (Minneapolis) earned a 6-2 victory over the Lady Bulldogs' Feriel and Berjane Rachida.
South Carolina State rebounded, winning the other two doubles matches.
Saturday (March 23), Howard continues league play against North Carolina Central. Match time is slated for 8:30 a.m.
