PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (March 2, 2024) – Fifth-year guard
Iyanna Warren (Accokeek, Md.) scored a game-high 18 points and senior forward
Kaiya Creek (Seat Pleasant, Md.) added 17 points to lead streaking Howard University women's basketball team (12-14, 9-3 MEAC) to a 64-48 win over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game.
It was the fourth straight win and six-of-the-last-seven for the streaking Bison.
Warren is playing her best basketball. In addition to her point totals, the All-MEAC candidate added six assists and now has 32 in the past five games.
Creek has also been a major reason the Bison are making a strong push with two games remaining in the regular. The senior forward got her team going, scoring nine of the team's first 11 points en route to a 24-18 lead in the first quarter. The Maryland native connected on 3-of- 5 from beyond the arc to go along with five rebounds and three assists.
It was one of the Bison's better offensive performances as they connected on 45-percent (27-of-60) from the floor and a season-high 54-percent (6-of-11) from the three-point line.
As effective as the duo were on the offensive end, it was equally the on defense, which used a 14-2 fourth quarter run to put the game away.
For the game, the Bison held the Hawks to 27-percent, including 3-of-15 from the three-point line. Howard's vaunted defense got 21 points off UMES turnovers while bullying the Hawks for 28 points in the paint.
Junior forward
Vanessa Blake (Summerville, S.C.) chipped in with seven points on a day when Howard played most of the game without the services of two key players: redshirt freshman and the team's leading scorer
Tyana Walker (Leawood, Kan.) and sophomore forward
Nile Miller (Haddonfield, N.J.), the team's leading rebounder. They both got into early foul trouble.
The Hawks (14-13, 7-5 MEAC) were led by Arianna Seawell with 16 points and Ja'la Bannerman added six points off the bench.
BISON NOTES: At 9-3 in conference play, Howard holds a two-game lead over UMES and North Carolina Central, who both have 7-5 records. Norfolk State is a 10-1 with only one blemish on its record and that was to the Bison in D.C. (Jan. 20). The two meet Thursday (March 7) in the regular season finale in Norfolk, Va.
NEXT UP: Howard closes out its 2023-24 home schedule Monday (March 4) when it hosts Delaware State at 5:30 p.m., in The Burr.
