WASHINGTON (March 4, 2024) - Redshirt freshman guard
Tyana Walker (Leawood, Kan.) came off the bench to score a game-high 17 points and fifth-year guard
Iyanna Warren (Accokeek, Md.) and junior forward
Marissa Steel (Laurel, Md.) combined for 12 points in the second half to help the Howard University women's basketball team run past Delaware State, 61-43, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) clash at Burr Gymnasium.
It was the fifth straight win for the streaking Bison (13-14, 10-3 MEAC).
Howard jumped out to the early 23-7 lead in the first quarter and a half and appeared. But the Hornets (8-18, 4-9 MEAC) put together a 16-2 spurt that closed the gap to a one-possession game, 25-23, at intermission. Much of the scoring by Delaware State came courtesy of Savannah Brooks and Ja'Naiah Perkins-Jackson, who combined for 12 of the team's points during the run.
Then, the Bison came out of the locker room and slowly put distance between them and their opponent, taking a 42-34 lead at the end of three.
It was Warren and Walker time in the fourth period as they combined for 13 points. The Bison defense, which has been stellar all season, shut down the visitors, holding them scoreless for almost seven minutes.
Howard forced 32 turnovers and converted them into 27 points.
Steel just missed a double-double with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Warren finished with 12 points and sophomore forward
Nile Miller (Haddonfield, N.J.) with eight rebounds, three blocks and four steals.
The Hornets were led by Perkins-Jackson and Brooks with 12 points and 11 points, respectively.
NEXT UP: Howard closes out the regular season at Norfolk State Thursday (March 7). Tipoff at 5 p.m., live on ESPNU.
