PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (March 2, 2024) – DMV native graduate guard
Jordan Hairston (Fairfax, Va.) scored a season-high 19 points to lead four players in double figures to help the Howard University men's basketball team to a 70-66 win over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game.
The win was the third in a row for the surging Bison (14-15, 8-4 MEAC) and fifth in the last six.
Hairston got Howard off to a good start as they held a 38-30 lead at the half. He did most of his damage from behind the three-point line where he was 4-for-6. The four made three pointers were also a season high for him. He also added three assists to his game stat totals.
With a plethora of injuries during the season, Hairston has stepped up big during the recent stretch, tallying 43 points in the last three games, hitting on 9-of-014 and a perfect 9-for-9 from the charity stripe.
From there, the duo of junior guards
Marcus Dockery (Washington) and
Bryce Harris (Brentwood, N.Y.) took over. Dockery, the leading three-point shooter in the conference all season, connected on 4-of-8 while also grabbing a career-best seven rebounds.
Harris, perhaps the most dominant player in the conference and a strong candidate for both MEAC Player and Defensive Player of the Year, had just another of his patented performance. He finished with points on 6-of-9 shooting, 10 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the year and two blocks.
Sophomore forward
Dom Campbell (10 points, four rebounds) helped the Bison cause early before he got into foul trouble while follow classmate
Shy Odom (Roxbury, Mass.), who is returning from an illness, saw limited time but he contributed six points and four rebounds.
For the game, Howard converted on 14-of-14 from the charity stripe, including a prefect 6-for-6 in the last minutes of the game. It was one of the team's better three-point shooting performances of the season as the trio of Hairston, Dockery and Harris combined for 9-of-15 from there.
The Hawks (8-19, 3-9 MEAC), who has lost three in a row and five of their last six, were led by Kelechi Okworogwo with a game-high 20 points, Elijah Wilson with 16 points and Dionte Johnson with 14 points.
OTHER NOTES: With the win, the Bison remain in a three-way tie for second with North Carolina Central and South Carolina State, all at 8-4 with two games remaining.
