TOWSON, Md. & TAMPA, Fla. (March 16, 2024) – Howard University women's track & field team put on a show at the Towson Spring Opener, hosted by the Towson Tigers, and the USF Alumni Invitational, hosted by the South Florida (USF) Bulls.
TOWSON SPRING OPENER
In Towson, the Bison throwers grabbed three victories, led by sophomore
Temi Banwo (Allen, Texas). The Texas native secured wins in the shot put (13.03 meters) and discus (41.12 meters). Graduate
Minyarn Smalls (Cary, N.C.) also took part in the shot put, earning third place (12.27 meters).
Fifth-year thrower
Erin Hatcher (Silver Spring, Md.) took home gold in the hammer, tossing nearly 193 feet (58.76 meters). Banwo and graduate
Zaria Opara (Carnation, Wash.) also competed, finishing sixth (42.68 meters) and third (45.01 meters), respectively. Opara also participated in the discus, throwing 38.25 meters while taking second overall.
USF ALUMNI INVITE
The 4x100 relay squad of graduate
Kailei Collins (Houston), junior
Tiffani-Rae Pittman (Bowie, Md.) and newcomers
Aiyana Gray-Williams (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and
Mackenzie Robinson (Ypsilanti, Mich.) highlighted the action in Florida, placing third with a 44.26 mark.
Individually, Collins, Gray-Williams and sophomore
Zoe Turner (Mableton, Ga.) competed in the 200-meter dash, finishing third (23.44), fifth (23.88) and seventh (23.92), respectively.
Second-year Bison
Aniya Woodruff (Harrisburn, N.C.) earned the bronze medal, running a time of 59.88 in the 400-meter hurdles, while graduate
Simone Watkins (Frisco, Texas) placed eighth (1:01.76) in the same event.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
On March 22-23, HU goes to High Point, N.C., for the Bob Davidson Team Challenge, hosted by the High Point Panthers.
