BROOKLYN, N.Y. (March 16, 2024) – Howard University women's lacrosse team dropped a tough, road contest at LIU, 16-6, at Bethpage FCU Stadium.
Despite the Bison nearly doubling possession on ground balls, 15-8, LIU outshot Howard, 41-12.
LIU took an early 4-0 advantage in the opening frame until fifth-year Bison
Quai Skeete-Ridley (New Carrollton, Md.) closed the period with score, thanks to an assist from junior
Maya Rhymes (Coatesville, Pa.), 4-1.
In the second quarter, LIU took control with six unanswered goals and held a 10-1 halftime lead.
After intermission, the Sharks added two more scores, but sophomores
Chase Coleman (Houston) and
Tea Vasquez (Oakland, Calif.) responded with goals of their own. LIU took a 14-3 advantage going into the final frame.
HU outscored LIU in the fourth, 3-2, with Coleman, Rhymes and senior
Kayla Rose (Uniondale, N.Y.) each registered a goal in the period.
Graduate
Kayla Robertson (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) had a team-leading four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
In the cage, senior goalie
Zahria Liggans (Detroit) made her Bison debut, racking up 12 saves.
For LIU, Olivia Fantigrossi produced five points (four goals & one assist) in the victory.
Saturday (March 23), the Bison return to Greene Stadium to face Sacred Heart. Match time is slated for noon on NEC Front Row.
