Men’s Basketball Clashes with Coppin State on Senior Night

Bison wrap up homestand against Eagles

WASHINGTON (February 25, 2024) – Howard University men's basketball team wraps up its four-game homestand Monday (Feb. 26) when they clash with Coppin State (CSU) on Senior Night. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.

LAST TIMEOUT
 
Saturday (Feb. 24), sophomore forward Shy Odom (Roxbury, Mass.) came off the bench to score 15 of his game-high 16 points in the second half to lead five players in double figures as the Bison outlasted Morgan State (MSU), 78-72, in a key Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game at Burr Gymnasium.
 
Graduate forward Seth Towns (Columbus, Ohio) finished with 15 points, junior guards Bryce Harris (Brentwood, N.Y.) with a double-double (12 points & 12 rebounds) and Marcus Dockery (Washington) with 11 points and five rebounds and DMV native graduate Jordan Hairston (Fairfax, Va.) with 10 important points.
 
LAST MATCHUP
 
On Jan. 29, Harris scored a team-high 18 points to lead all starters in double figures as the Bison pulled away to an 81-66 win over CSU inside the Physical Education Complex Arena.
 
Sophomore forward Dom Campbell (Scarborough, Maine) scored 11 points in the paint while grabbing five rebounds.
 
Dockery finished with 15 points. Towns added 14 points and five rebounds. Graduate guard Isiah Warfield (Monaca, Pa.) ended with 11 points, seven rebounds and a team-high five assists.
 
Coppin State was led by Ryan Archey with 20 points, followed by Justin Winston and Cameron Sparrow with 12 points and 11 points, respectively, off the bench.

SERIES RECORD
 
On Jan. 29, Howard defeated CSU, 81-66, in Baltimore for its third straight win in the series. Coppin State last won, 81-72, in Burr Gymnasium (2017).
 
The Eagles holds the advantage, 14-12, in the series dating back to 2006.
 
HOWARD
 
As the season winds down with four games remaining in the regular season, the Bison are fighting for seeding in the MEAC Tournament.  They are currently tied for second with games remaining at home versus Coppin State and Delaware State (March 4) and road games at Maryland Eastern Shore (March 2) and Norfolk State (March 7) in the regular season finale.  This game looms large for Howard if it is to repeat as regular season champions. There will be added incentive for the six members of the team who will be honored.
 
The Bison (12-15, 6-4 MEAC) are led by Towns (15.0 ppg, 6.5 rpg, team-leading 60 total assists, nine total blocked shots, 56 made three pointers & 83-percent from the free throw line), Harris (16.2 ppg, 7.3 rpg, team-leading 24 total blocks & 57-percent shooting from the floor), Dockery (13.7 ppg, career-best 49 total assists, 17 total steals, team-leading 74 made three pointers & 81-percent from the free throw line), Odom (8.9 ppg & 3.6 rpg) and Campbell (7.9 ppg, 4.3 rpg & 49-percent from the field).
 
COPPIN STATE
 
Coppin State (2-22, 1-9 MEAC) is coming off a heartbreaking 68-66 home loss to Norfolk State Saturday (Feb. 24).
 
The Eagles are led by redshirt senior forward Justin Winston (13.4 ppg, 5.5 rpg & 86-percent from the free throw line), junior guard Greg Spurlock (8.8 ppg, 4.1 rpg & team-leading 31 total steals), freshman guard Ryan Archey (7.9 ppg) and graduate forward Toto Fagbenle (5.3 ppg, 2.9 rpg & team-leading 21 total blocks).
 
MEAC NOTES
 
HOWARD
 
The Bison lead the MEAC in field goal percentage (45-percent), three-point shooting (36-percent) and three pointers made (7.9 per game).
 
Individually, Towns is making a strong bid for Player of the Year consideration. He is third three pointers made per game (2.3) and rebounding (6.5), fifth in free throw shooting (83-percent), sixth in assists and seventh in scoring (15.0).
 
Dockery leads the conference in three-point shooting (40-percent) and three pointers made (2.7 per game).
 
Harris is also a strong candidate for both MEAC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year, leading the league in field goal percentage (56-percent), second in scoring (16.2) and rebounding (7.3), fifth in blocked shots and 11th in free throw shooting (73-percent).
 
COPPIN STATE
 
The Eagles rank fourth in free throw shooting (72-percent) and blocked shots.
 
Individually, Winston is second in free throw shooting (86-percent), seventh in steals, eighth in rebounding (5.5) and 12th in scoring (13.4).
 
Spurlock is eighth in steals and Fagbenle leads the conference in blocked shots.
 
BISON NOTES
  • Injuries have forced the Bison to play 11 different starting lineups this season. The trio of Towns, Harris and Dockery have average over 30 minutes each.
 
NEXT UP
 
Howard travels to Princess Anne, Md., to take on the Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore Saturday (March 2) at 4 p.m.
