Women’s Track & Field Holds On to Win Third Straight MEAC Crown

Bison secure third consecutive indoor title

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (February 20, 2024) – Howard University women's track & field team held on to win its third straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Championship, tallying 204 points. The three-day event (Feb. 18-20) took place at the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach, Va.
 
Overall, HU produced four victories on Championship Tuesday.
 
Junior Tiffani-Rae Pittman (Bowie, Md.), sophomores Zoe Turner (Mableton, Ga.) and Aniya Woodruff (Harrisburn, N.C.) and newcomer Mackenzie Robinson (Ypsilanti, Mich.) secured the Bison's six indoor conference title with a dominant performance in the 4x400 relay, winning a season-best mark of 3:42.03, which was six seconds faster than second-place Coppin State.
 
Individually, Woodruff and Turner competed in the 400-meter dash where they took gold (55.26) and bronze (56.01), respectively.
 
Graduate Kailei Collins (Houston) earned a pair of gold medals with victories in the 60-meter dash (7.43) and 200-meter dash (23.69).
 
In the field, sophomores Jazmyn Wajd (Tampa, Fla.), Kelis Armstrong (Plano, Texas) and Ija Mumford (Winston-Salem, N.C.) represented Bison Nation in the triple jump where they placed third (12.05 meters), fourth (11.93 meters) and sixth (11.73 meters), respectively.
 
Graduate Minyarn Smalls (Cary, N.C.) took home the bronze medal after tossing 13.11 meters in the shot put.
 
Howard Director of Track & Field David Oliver was named MEAC Women's Outstanding Coach after leading the Bison to 15 medals (seven gold, four silver & four bronze).
 
Norfolk State finished second with 188 team points while Morgan State placed third (66.5 points).
 
Morgan State's Johnelle Johnson was selected MEAC Women's Indoor Field Outstanding Field Athlete while the Spartans' Yvone Sandui and Mercyline Kimaiyo were named MEAC Women's Indoor Co-Outstanding Runners.
 
On March 1-3, the Bison will travel to Boston for the IC4A/ECAC Indoor Championships. This will be there last meet before the NCAA Indoor Championship, which begins March 8.
